What is pushback racking?
Pushback racking is a pallet storage method that allows pallets to be stored from 2 to 6 deep on either side of an aisle, giving you higher storage density than other forms of racking. A pushback rack system can double or triple your storage capacity compared to standard pallet rack or double deep racking systems.
How it works
A pushback system contains a pair of inclined rails and a series of nesting carts that ride on these rails. The first pallet is loaded on the top cart by a forklift. As each additional pallet is loaded, it pushes the previous pallets back one position. When unloading, the sequence reverses, the operator removes the front pallet and the remaining pallets follow forward automatically until the lane is empty.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the typical lane depths available for pushback racking systems?
Pushback racking systems can typically be configured from 2 to 6 pallets deep, depending on load weight, pallet type, and desired storage density. The right depth depends on average pallets per SKU.
What types of forklifts are compatible with pushback racking systems?
Pushback racking can be used with most standard forklifts, including counterbalance, reach, and swing reach trucks. No specialized equipment is required for standard operations.
How wide should aisles be for efficient pushback racking operation?
Aisles should provide enough clearance for the operator to square the forklift directly to the rack face, typically 6 inches more than the truck manufacturer's minimum aisle requirement.
How much push force is typically required to load pallets in pushback racking?
The force required is approximately 4% of the total weight being pushed back, not counting the pallet on the forks. For example, 2,000lb loads on a 6 deep lane require about 400lb of force to load.
Can pushback racking be used in cold storage or freezer environments?
Yes. Pushback racking performs reliably in a wide range of temperatures, from +122°F to -58°F. It's well-suited for cold storage, food and beverage facilities, and blast freezer environments.
What kind of maintenance or inspections are required for pushback racking systems?
Pushback racking requires minimal maintenance. Bearings are permanently lubricated, and periodic visual inspections are recommended to keep components clean and aligned for long-term safety and performance.
Can you achieve FIFO with pushback?
Yes. The key is configuring the system so each product utilizes multiple lanes. If a product has three or four lanes of pushback, the operator simply ships from the oldest lane first.
How does 3D pushback compare to other systems on the market?
3D offers one of the lowest profiles in the market, our 5 and 6 deep lanes are roughly half the height of many competing systems, giving extra lift clearance and future load height flexibility. Every system includes safety features standard, including linked carts, lane full indicators, pallet stops, and cart lift-out protectors. Wheels are rated at 1,400 lb with 5/8" solid steel shafts, among the strongest in the industry.
