What is carton flow?
Carton flow is a storage method that uses wheels or rollers, along with gravity, to convey cases from the loading side of a rack to the picking side. Multiple levels and multiple lanes per level create far more pick faces in a smaller footprint than standard rack or static shelving, reducing pick paths and improving picking efficiency.
How it works
Cases are loaded from the back of the lane and travel by gravity along wheel or roller tracks toward the picking side. As a case is removed from the front, the remaining cases roll forward automatically, so pickers don't need to reach into the rack, and the system supports consistent first-in-first-out picking without added operating steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the wheel centers for 3D carton flow?
Wheel centers are customized to the application, from 1.5" to 6" c/c in 1/2" increments. Typical spacing is 2", 2.5", 3", or 4" c/c for steel wheels, and 1.5", 2", 2.5", or 3" c/c for plastic wheels.
What type of wheels do you use on carton flow racks?
We offer both steel and plastic wheels. Plastic wheels have a wider surface and are used for boxes and totes under 25 lb per square foot. Steel wheels are used for heavier boxes and totes, or rougher warehouse environments.
Do I need an internal support beam for carton flow?
This depends on the length of the bed and the weight of the boxes, but generally, at 25 lb per square foot, our welded structural beds can span 8 feet without internal support beams.
What kind of warranty do you offer?
We offer a one-year warranty from shipment on all 3D materials.
What bed widths and lengths do you manufacture?
Bed widths available are 24.5″, 31.5″, 39.25″, 46.75″, and 53.5″, a combination of these will usually fit most beam lengths. There's no limit on depth, though most applications range between 4 and 10 feet long.
What beams do I need to use with your carton flow?
We design our carton flow beds to suit whatever beams you're using, including step beams, box beams, channel beams, and angle beams.
Do you offer dividers?
Yes, we offer 30″ long dividers that snap onto the shafts for maximum flexibility.
What makes 3D's carton flow different from other bed style designs?
We weld our bed frames, where most competitors use bolts, a stronger design that holds up better to heavy use. We also supply wider beds, most manufacturers use a 16″ bed width, which means more seams where beds meet across a beam. Our wider 47″ beds mean fewer seams and a more consistent surface.
What kinds of products are suitable for carton flow?
Carton flow works best for products with moderate turnover, generally picked at least once a week, but not more than about half a pallet's worth of cases in that same week. Faster moving products are typically picked directly from pallets, while very slow moving products are better suited to static shelving.
What is the difference between carton flow and pallet flow?
Pallet flow moves full pallets by gravity from a load aisle to an unload aisle. Carton flow works at the case or carton level, moving individual cases from the loading side of a lane to the picking side, giving you many more pick faces in the same footprint.
